The Dominican School Campus
For 25 years the DSPT had been housed at 2401 Ridge Road, Berkeley, CA, a
property leased from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP). When
CDSP wanted to grow their facilities, the Dominican School was forced to seek
a new home. After an extensive search, in the Fall of 2005, the Dominicans
of the Western Province purchased a new campus to house their seminary and
graduate school, the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT).
In the Fall of 2006, the new campus opened at the corner of Arch and Vine
in Berkeley, CA (2301 Vine Street).
Great Lawn
When entering the campus, one is immediately greeted by the “Great
Lawn”. The Great Lawn gives one the feeling of a cloister, a quiet calming plane of
grass, well defined on all sides but simple in form. The Tuscan columns frame
the colonnade gives the lawn a character, texture and reference to history.
the Great Lawn provides space for a variety of experiences from large gatherings,
classes on the lawn, to quiet meditation.
Classroom and Administration Building
From the front gate the Classroom and Administrative building is in the right.
This building houses the Galleria, 3 classrooms, the kitchen and on the lower
floor, the Administrative offices.
The Galleria runs the length of the upper floor on the East side with windows
that view the Great Lawn. The Galleria is a place to display art, but also
a gathering space.
Three classrooms run along the west side of the building. Classroom 1 is a
theater style classroom with all of the latest technology to digitally record
classes for broadcast and archival purposes. Classroom 1 holds up to 70 students
at a time. Classrooms 2and 3 are smaller seminar style classrooms. These two
classrooms can be joined into one large classroom and can also open up into
the Galleria for very large gatherings.
The administrative offices are located on the lower floor of the building.
Faculty and Student Building
Faculty offices and student rooms are all located in the East building along with the Chapel. Students have access to the Student Computer Room 24 hrs a day. The Chapel opens up directly onto the Great Lawn. The direct connection enlivens the Great Lawn and gives the Chapel prominence at the heart of the campus.
