MASTER OF DIVINITY
(program description)
Admissions Requirements
Applicants to the Master of Divinity program must hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution completed prior to matriculation.
Lay ministry applicants - Because the M.Div. program normally leads to the practice of ministry, its admissions requirements include not only standards of academic preparation and ability, but also religious, moral and other personality qualifications consonant with the practice of ministry in the Roman Catholic tradition.
Ordained ministry applicants - Applicants preparing for ordained ministry in the Roman Catholic Church must be in a formation program of a religious community or a diocese, as well as fulfill all of the prerequisites of the PPF.
All Master of Divinity degree applicants must provide the following documents to the DSPT admissions office:
- A completed application form - Paper application forms are available by contacting the DSPT Admissions Office at admissions@dspt.edu, or toll-free at 888/450-DSPT; or applicants may apply on-line.
- A statement of purpose - This statement should articulate clearly and concisely the applicant's goals, study interests, and the reason DSPT is an appropriate fit for the applicant's proposed program of study. Although the statement is not intended to be a personal biography, it is the applicant's self-presentation to the admissions committee and therefore an extremely important part of the application. The statement should be about one page in length.
- Three letters of recommendation (two academic and one pastoral) - The academic letters of recommendation should address the applicant's academic and intellectual potential for graduate level work. The pastoral letter should address the candidate's religious, moral and other personality qualifications consonant with the practice of ministry in the Roman Catholic tradition. Applicants who are members of religious orders affiliated with DSPT do not need to submit letters of recommendation. Please contact the Admissions Office to inquire as to whether your order qualifies for this exemption.
- Official transcripts from all previous college work - Transcripts must show a Bachelor of Arts degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution and a grade point average of 2.3 or better.
The courses of the M.Div. program presuppose a basic foundation in philosophy as well as an introduction to Scripture such as that provided in the DSPT undergraduate philosophy program. All applicants to the M.Div. program must have completed eighteen semester units of philosophy, equivalent to DSPT's four-semester sequence in the history of philosophy, Philosophy of Nature, and Philosophical Anthropology. They must also have completed six units of introductory courses in both the Old and New Testaments. Where a deficiency exists, a student may be accepted and allowed to enroll in these courses concurrently with M.Div. courses.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores - International students must have a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or its equivalent.
- Application Fee - Submit a fee of $40.00 payable by check to the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, or online by credit card.
