M.A. (PHILOSOPHY)

(program description)

Admissions Requirements

Admission Requirements. Applicants to the Master of Arts in Philosophy program must hold a bachelor's degree from a fully accredited institution completed prior to matriculation, and provide the following documents to the DSPT Admissions Office:

  • A completed application form - Paper application forms are available by contacting the DSPT Admissions Office at , or toll-free 888/450-DSPT; or you may apply on-line.

  • An academic statement of purpose - This statement should articulate clearly and concisely your goals, study interests, and the reason the DSPT is an appropriate fit for your proposed program of study; this statement should not be a personal biography. The statement is used by the DSPT Admissions Committee to determine your preparation, as well as, your "fit" with the specific resources of the DSPT faculty. The statement of purpose is your self-presentation to the committee; it is an extremely important part of your application. Your statement of purpose should be approximately one page in length.

  • Three letters of academic recommendation - Unlike character references, these academic recommendations should speak directly to your academic and intellectual potential. Choose people who can address articulately your suitability to complete graduate level academic work. Recommendation forms are available by contacting the DSPT Admissions Office, or may be dowloaded through the on-line application.

  • Official transcripts from all previous college work - Transcripts must show a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution, and a grade point average of 3.0 or above. Where a deficiency exists, the admissions committee will propose prerequisites.

  • Philosophy courses - Applicants who do not have a B.A. in philosophy must have at least twenty-four semester units of philosophy from an accredited school in courses equivalent to the following courses in the DSPT B.A. in Philosophy program:
    - History of Ancient Philosophy
    - History of Modern Philosophy
    - History of Medieval Philosophy
    - History of Contemporary Philosophy
    - Philosophy of Nature
    - Philosophical Anthropology
    - Logic
    - Ethics
Applicants lacking this course work may be admitted to DSPT as special students to make up any deficiencies, but will not normally be admitted to the M.A. philosophy program until the course work is completed.

  • An academic writing sample - Submit an academic research paper that exhibits correct usage of bibliographical materials and footnotes, not to exceed twenty pages.

  • Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores - GRE scores are required and must be no older than 5 years from the date of application. DSPT expects its applicants to achieve a verbal score of at least 550 and an analytical writing score of at least 4.5 on a 6-point scale. Schedule a test date early in the application process in order to ensure that your transcript is available to the Admissions Committee by the application review date. Instead of the GRE, international students must have a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or its equivalent.

  • Application fee - Submit a fee of $40.00 payable by check to the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, or on-line by credit card.
