HOUSING
The Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology has two housing options for students:

Apartments – The DSPT owns an apartment building at 2510 Le Conte Avenue in Berkeley, four blocks from the DSPT and one block from the GTU Library and UC Berkeley.  This building has 13 units (studio and 1BR), each unfurnished with its own kitchen and bathroom.  There is a washer and dryer on-site.  Parking is very limited; it’s best to purchase a street permit from the City of Berkeley.

Intentional Community – St. Jerome’s in nearby El Cerrito offers 10 rooms adjacent to a Catholic church and school about 2.5 miles from the DSPT.  This community is ordinarily made up of students from one or more of the three Catholic schools of the GTU.  Each student has his/her own bedroom and shares a bathroom with one other student of the same sex.  All other facilities are held in common, and all costs above rent (food, supplies, utilities) are divided among the group.  Students develop their own practices each year, but they usually have dinner together once a week and get together to pray in common as well.  Parking is limited.  There are laundry facilities on the premises.

Interested students must submit a DSPT Housing Application indicating their preferences.  Many other GTU schools have their own housing, often opened to students of other schools once their own students are placed.  Being so close to UC Berkeley, there are many apartment buildings and other housing options in the area, and Craig’s List is an excellent online resource.  The DSPT Housing Office will gladly assist students with finding a suitable place to live during their program.

Members of Roman Catholic dioceses or religious orders without communities in the Berkeley area are encouraged to seek housing with another religious community, subject to the rules, fees and requirements of that community.  One option is St. Albert Priory, a large Dominican community in Oakland and home of the Dominican student brothers at the DSPT.  Lay students coming only for a summer session may be able to find housing at St. Albert Priory or at one of the other GTU schools.

To apply for housing, or for assistance in locating housing options in the Berkeley area, download the housing application PDF (click the gold button above) and submit the application by fax or mail to the DSPT housing Office:
