Installation of Fr. John Roche, SDB, as Director of ISS

Called for the Service of Animation and Government

September 28, 2011

Fr. John Roche SDB was installed as director of the ISS and director of the Salesian community in Berkeley by Fr Timothy C. Ploch, SDB, Provincial of the San Francisco Province.

Salesian Constitutions, #55. The director in the community

The director represents Christ who unites his followers in the service of the Father. He is at the centre of the community, a brother among brothers, who recognise his responsibility and authority.

His first task is to animate the community so that it may live faithful to the Constitutions and grow in unity. He coordinates the efforts of all, bearing in mind the rights, duties and capabilities of every member.

He also has a direct responsibility toward each confrere; he helps him realise his own personal vocation and carry out the work entrusted to him.

He extends his solicitude to the young for whom we work and to our collaborators, so that they may share in the community's mission with increasing responsibility.

In his words, frequent contacts and opportune decisions he is a father, teacher and spiritual guide.

Prayer of the Faithful

Enlightened and animated by so many teachings and exhortations, let us pray that God bless this community and strengthen with his grace our Director in his service of leadership:

For all our communities dedicated to the service of the young:

  • may the example of fatherliness set by Don Bosco be for us an object of reflection, a model for imitation and a trait to emulate.

For our Director, John, called to promote unity and fraternal communion:

  • with the grace of the Holy Spirit, may he dedicate himself to form a true family where mutual respect and unity thrive.

For those entrusted to our care and whom we meet everyday in our work:

  • may we accept them with an open heart, educate them with a goodness born of patience and firmness and show them loving kindness.

For vocations to the Salesian life:

  • may the Lord raise up new workers for his harvest and help us become convincing models for the young of a radical Christian discipleship.

For ourselves gathered here:

  • may we learn to serve God in the young and to share together the joys and sorrows of our work.

For all those confreres who have died, grant to them the glory of resurrection:

  • may we one day share in their eternal glory and everlasting life.

O God, in the person of Saint John Bosco you have given the Church a Father and Teacher of youth. Bless our brother John who has been called to lead and serve and who has begun his service of animation and government. With pastoral charity, discreet wisdom and self-sacrificing love, may he animate this community and promote a renewed Salesian presence among the young. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Concluding Prayer

God our Father, on this occasion of succession in the service of authority, you invite us through this renewed sign of your providence to experience gratitude and confidence. Grant that we may remain one in heart and soul, doing good and becoming signs and bearers of God's love to the young. May the protection of Mary Help of Christians and the intercession of Saint John Bosco accompany us always. Through Christ our Lord.
