John Searle, PhD "Language in the Construction of Social Reality"

On Wednesday, October 20, DSPT had the pleasure of hosting Dr. John Searle, one of the greatest living philosophers of the English-speaking world, to present his lecture "Language in the Construction of Social Reality". The lecture was followed by an in-depth question and answer period after which Dr. Searle commented that he was "impressed with the school [DSPT] and the intellectual talent of the audience."

Through inviting Professor Searle to speak, DSPT is continuing to fulfill her mission of bringing the Catholic tradition into a living dialogue with contemporary culture. As the only graduate school in the United States devoted exclusively to philosophy and theology, we were excited to host Dr. Searle's talk and expand our cooperation with UC Berkeley. DSPT students are already able to take UCB classes for credit (and vice-versa). This semester a course, Philosophy of Society, is being team-taught by DSPT philosophy professor Dr. Marga Vega with Dr. Searle. By embracing this cooperation, we give our students more of the resources needed to engage the world with the Catholic tradition in the model of St. Thomas Aquinas.
