Prayer & Spiritual Practice: An Interfaith Community Event

On Sunday, September 26th, five panelists from different faith traditions came together to share their various prayer and spiritual practices. Sponsored by the Second Church of Christ, Scientist and the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, the event consisted of each panelist sharing a handful of prayers used in their congregations, explaining the purpose of their prayers and their hope for how they might come to transform and edify the community at large. The panelists included: Sister Marianne Farina, CSC, Ph.D., representing Catholicism as a Sister of the Holy Cross and professor at the DSPT; Rabbi Chaya Gusfield from the Beth Chaim Congregation; Rev. Bill Hamilton-Holway, co minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley; Ameena Jandali, founding member and Content Director of the Islamic Networks Group; and Brian Talcott, CSB, a speaker, writer, and teacher of prayer based healing in the Christian Science tradition.

After the presentations, the audience was invited to ask the panelists questions in order to dive deeper into each tradition. A lively discussion followed, where issues concerning community solidarity in light of violence as well as sustaining interfaith relations through promoting similar events were discussed.
